Minneapolis: Particularly after World War II, the TCRT electric railway system
found itself competing increasingly with automobiles for roadway space. Not only
did automobiles and other motor vehicles run on publicly provided and
maintained streets and highways, but heavy traffic was allowed to run over
streetcar tracks, inflicting damage and increasing maintenance costs. Here a
trolley rolls across the Hennepin Ave. Bridge as private cars bounce along its
tracks. (Photo: L. O. King, Jr.)
