Baltimore: Extensive sections of the Baltimore-area electric railway system were
located in reservations and private rights-of-way – what today would be called
"transitways", and something which many local planners are now struggling to
acquire. The streetcar line on Liberty Heights Avenue was able to provide
substantial speed in a grassy median reservation – highly attractive to
passengers and general public alike. Here, a PCC car runs on the last day of
service in 1955, before buses were substituted to grapple with the automobiles
and trucks on Baltimore's increasingly crowded, publicly funded streets –
resulting in serious erosion of ridership.
